IN REMEMBRANCE
Late Founder Ivan Reddy
passionate about transformation within the construction industry.
When I first started in construction 10 years ago, I had no on-site experience. My internship was office-bound which offered no technical education.
It was very intimidating to walk onto a site that was male-dominated. Not knowing what to say or how to not seem ignorant.
At first, I was very reserved and didn’t say much, trying to soak up as much info as I could. Starting off in this company I was able to gain some technical experience which helped my confidence.
Working in a male-dominated industry the older generation don’t always take well to young females. They often try to dominate the situation and leave little or less room for your input or suggestions.
In one incident a site agent yelled at me so badly I burst into tears. I don’t have to tell you how much worse it made it and the stereotypes continued.
Eventually, I was thrown into the deep end, where I had no choice but to take charge. Confidence is key. With help from my peers, I gained valuable technical knowledge and still learn every day. It’s great to also see how the industry has had an influx of females who hold a vast array of degrees and diplomas and work with them on a daily basis.
Rebuilding the south african workforce.
